5 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations   August 6, 2010
Simon Waddington (Oakland, California)
I bought this Thermos so we could take ice cream on camping trips, hopefully without buying expensive dry-ice. On receiving it I filled it with ice from the freezer without any pre-chilling and put it on the counter in our kitchen at around 70F. After 24 hours sitting the outside was cool but not cold, I shook the thermos and heard nothing, so I took a quick peek inside... it was still completely full of frozen ice. After 48 hours it was still full of ice but looked like the cubes had melted a little. After 72 hours, yes THREE DAYS, I opened it up and used the pouring spout to get ice cold water from the thermos. When I opened it up fully it was still 3/4 full of a solid block of ice. Let's just say I'm very impressed with the thermal insulation provided by this flask, with a 40F differential it held up extremely well!

Okay so our kitchen isn't at 90F like some of the campsites we go to in summer but my plan is to put it inside a regular cooler which we can usually keep at 40F or so when camping and still have it keep our frozen stuff frozen. In fact I might even buy another flask like this but I'm going to try it out first. The mouth also isn't as wide as I'd hoped so it will be a bit of a chore to pack ice-cream into it and somehow it just doesn't look as big as I thought, does this really hold 3 pints? I had to go get a measuring jug to check and you know what, it really does!

The top seems well designed with a pouring spout that works without opening the lid and a couple of cups built in. The handle and strap are also convenient for toting this around. All in all it may be an expensive thermos but it certainly seems to be well designed. As a physicist I can tell you is no difference between keeping stuff cold and keeping stuff hot BUT with ice you benefit from the very significant latent heat of fusion that keeps stuff cold as the ice melts (it takes 330 Joules to melt 1 gram of ice, but only 4 Joules to raise its temperature 1C after that) so I would not expect it to maintain a 40F positive temperature difference for three days, or ditto for chilled (but not frozen) liquid, far from it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as versatile as it seems   July 30, 2010

I bought this thermos to carry stew for lunch.

The thermos works quite well. The temperature retention is much better than I would have suspected, but I have found that leaving the steel top off hurts retention. The gasket hasn't leaked on me as of yet. All the components are easy to twist on and off, very little force required. The size speaks for itself.

For drinks this thermos is excellent. Iced drinks will stay iced for the whole day pretty much, and a small device inside the top keeps ice from clogging the spout. A separate air hole allows a good flow rate out the spout. It works for sodas because the top withstands pressure well, just be cautious when you open the top. The top is a bit more complicated then I would like; it has lots of small parts and it isn't dishwasher safe.

For solid foods I've had less luck. I just haven't found a convenient way of eating stew without making a mess or bringing a second container to actually eat out of. I haven't given up hope yet, there are portion-sized, insulated jars specifically for this purpose that I plan to try.

For drinks you will not beat this Thermos, but for soups and stews, an insulated food jar might be a better option.

It's a great buy---good thermos for the money. It has a cup for use and pour spout, great easy grip handle and very durable. You can't beat this one--a good buy.

Without question, absolutely GREAT BANG FOR YOUR BUCK! the features for this bottle are seemingly endless! 1) It is a TRUE leak-proof cap. 2) The cap locks in the EXACT position EVERY time! 3) I have experienced with other bottles, that if you leave them in direct sunlight, they loose there cooling capabilities rapidly. NOT SO with this bottle! Liquids remain ice cold. 4) Last but not least, cost efficiency. SEVERAL over-the-counter bottles, cost more. But yet seriously lack the attributes described about. Aesthetically beautiful as well. Clearly making the purchase of this bottle, a GREAT BUY!!!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I hoped for.   May 9, 2010

I bought this to take home made soups to work. Wide mouth is perfect for chunky food. Large volume is enough for generous portions. Best of all - piping hot soup all day - even after 8hrs. I've been using it for a month and couldn't be happier. Can't speak to durability or longevity.
